The Story
“Tacky the Penguin” being described from the companion’s point of view prior to the hunters coming in the book, Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester.
Map Makers
Ms. Nichols’ second graders created Bubble Maps describing Tacky from four different points of view: the hunters’, the companions’ before the hunters arrived, the companion’s after the hunters arrived, and Tacky himself.
Sawgrass Bay Elementary is part of the Lake County Public School system. They have over 1000 students at this Title I school comprised of a large population of second language learners. The school is in its third full year of Thinking Maps implementation and doing an incredible job under the leadership of Dr. Julio Valle, Principal. The school just started implementing the Write from the Beginning and Beyond this year.
Expert Opinion
This Bubble Map is an exemplary map for multiple reasons. This map is clearly an original map constructed by students, and the illustration of the character being described shows depth of thought. The point of view in the Frame of Reference adds a level of rigor to the map and influences the adjectives the students chose. All of the descriptors, except for loud, are inferred and demonstrate an understanding of the character as seen through the eyes of the other penguins. Great job!
